Alexa

The next day, Alex raced after Charlie as they weaved around others enjoying the brisk but sunny day. They had gone sledding and she had beat him to the bottom of Pansy Hill, but he’d bet her—double or nothing—that he could get home first. Of course, he’d started running before she’d agreed to anything, which had left her no choice but to chase after him and get there first. Alex managed to pull ahead by a good couple of yards, but just as she was rounding the corner at the bottom of their street, fate stepped in—as it always did with her.

WHAM!!!

Alex slammed into the ground. A pair of high heels and a small dog went flying in the opposite direction. Alex struggled to get her bearings. Was her foot over her head? Would she have to pull her ribs out of her back? She couldn’t tell. Every time Alex tried moving, sharp pain shot through her ankle, so she lay back down on the ground to wait for Charlie. He would help her make it back home.

Alex waited. And waited.

Where was he? He should have been just behind her. Careful not to make any sudden movements, she managed to push herself up into a sitting position. Her head was pounding, and when she saw Charlie standing just a few feet away, she wondered if she had a concussion. That could be the only explanation for the hallucination.

What is your full name? she asked herself. Alexa Marie Parker.

What is your address? 143 Pineview Lane, Lakeview, Minnesota.

What month were you born? March.

Who is your best friend? She paused, glancing toward Charlie. He hadn’t stopped to help her. He had passed by and was now helping the blonde who’d had the audacity to knock her down.

Alex lay back down in the slushy snow. “Ow, my ankle. It must be broken!” Not her finest moment, she would admit, but it was the only thing she could think of.

Nothing. No response. Nada.

The blonde didn’t even look hurt. A few scrapes on her knee and Charlie had turned into Florence Nightingale. Why was she wearing high heels in this weather anyway?

Alex crawled toward them, dragging one leg behind her as she moaned. “I hope I’ll be able to walk again. You never know with these things. I could be paralyzed.” She knew she sounded like an idiot, but the way he was smiling at…her…well, it was enough to make Alex sick. Literally. Because right then she puked up everything she’d had for breakfast. And to make matters worse, it steamed when it hit the snow.

At least it got Charlie’s attention. He glanced up, seeming surprised to see her. “Hey, I saw you guys collide. You all right?” Before Alex could answer, he continued. “This is Cynthia Kenderton, and this is her dog, Mozart.” Charlie gestured toward a gray ball curled up in Cynthia’s arms. It looked more like a rodent. The poor girl must have been swindled.

With a nod that barely acknowledged Cynthia’s existence, Alex held out a hand to Charlie.
